Testing Application-aware Networks - Why Mu?

Mu Dynamics’ innovative approach to test DPI, UTM, DLP, Mail Gateways, Application and Web Proxies:

  • Adapts to your complex environment and allows you to rapidly test for any new flows/applications or permutations that run on your network
  • Reduces time-to-test by accelerating network test creation, network test execution and field issue replication to ensure accurate tests that are representative of real-world scenarios
  • Increases network test coverage and product quality without additional resources

Customer Challenges

It’s difficult to keep up with new application types such as P2P and Gaming, in order to ensure proper traffic classification.

Moreover, traditional network application test tools generally are very labor-intensive to use (and staffing levels are not growing). Also, network application testers have never been able to leverage a content repository of real-world traffic, so they are always starting from scratch.

The Mu Solution

Mu’s adaptive testing methodology enables you to keep up with the latest profiles using a streamlined network test creation process that starts from pcaps.
  • Application-level testing
Most traditional network test tools consist only of canned tests based on published protocol standards, but lack real-world content for testing custom or proprietary applications. As a result, customers have to resort to crafting test cases manually.
  • Using Mu, the network application tests generated are based on your actual applications/services, rather than on fixed protocols specs tested in isolation. Mu automates application-level multi-host/multi-protocol testing, significantly speeding up time to test.
  • Quality of service
Guaranteeing QoS where bandwidth is shared between users and user groups (e.g., LTE users and legacy 2.5/3G users in the LTE evolved packet core (EPC)) is a challenge.  Using a traffic generation tool to generate L2, L3, and application flows is inaccurate due to the static nature of canned test traffic.
  • Mu helps you improve QoS testing via:
    • Realistic, stateful replication of complex network traffic exchanges
    • Auto-generation of thousands of tests to validate traffic classification
  • Resilience concerns
Issues with protocol handlers cause traffic mis-classification. Until now, the industry has lacked effective tools to perform thorough resilience testing.
  • Mu enables you to auto-generate thousands of malformed fuzz tests for more effective resilience and security testing.
  • Regression failures
Staying on top of threats and vulnerabilities seen on the network.
  • Automated regression, running old threats and application profiles against new product versions, helps prevent regression failures

Customer Highlight

Juniper Networks uses Mu’s solution in its automated regression test bed for products across various groups, including firewalls and intrusion detection.

Results: Leveraging Mu's Protocol Fuzzing module, Juniper is able to run millions of tests and run them quickly, accurately and repeatedly.

“Our customers require high-performance security products to be resistant to inadvertent or malicious weaknesses. Mu helps our product development teams ensure that customer's services using Juniper-based infrastructure are fast, reliable and secure - ultimately reducing costly application downtime.”

-- Michael Frendo, SVP of High-End Security Systems, Juniper Networks
