Use Cases: Industrial Control Systems, Cyber Security Users & Vendors
Many manufacturers, governments and Department of Defense (DoD)
critical assets and infrastructure agencies are converting proprietary
systems to IP-based networks. The costs of these necessary cyber security upgrades are staggering - Time Magazine notes that the U.S. will spend $2 trillion in the next two decades upgrading electricity and gas infrastructure alone.
During this transition from stand-alone
homogenous Industrial Control Systems, where what was once a proprietary network is
becoming exposed to a much larger possible attack surface. The attack surface is
compounded with complex and diverse IT Systems, varied programmable
logic controllers, SCADA Control Systems, Weapon platforms, or Combat
Systems. Importantly, software bugs that were previously isolated in
proprietary networks are now exploitable since the vulnerabilities are now more widely
exposed via the open IP network.
One industrial control systems end user recently
selected Mu Dynamics to provide robustness testing and proactive service
assurance through analysis, assessment, and remediation based upon
the National Defense Infrastructure (NDI) and International Defense
Infrastructure (INDI) requirements. Deploying a Service Analyzer (download here) helps the industrial control systems operator assess the potential impact
to military and support operations that would result from the loss or
compromise of infrastructure services. Infrastructure Analysis and
Assessment, Remediation, Indications and Warning, Mitigation, Response,
and Reconstitution - span activities that occur before, during, and
after events that result in infrastructure compromise or disruption.
Government end users also benefit from using the service analyzer to embrace
prudent business and operational planning practices to mitigate the
potential impact of the loss or compromise of industrial control system devices used within critical infrastructure settings.
As a result, they now provide Department Indications and Warning
(I&W) to support national critical infrastructure protection.
Several industrial control system end users (asset owners) and a number of vendor suppliers are now using Mu Secure Industrial Control (MUSIC) real-world certification
to proactively measure these safety and reliability issues before they
occur. Additional MUSIC certification information is available through
an online request or by sending email to music@mudynamics.com. Mu Dynamics strongly supports the work of the ISA Security Compliance Institute, which is creating a new ISASecure® logo program that will replace MUSIC™ as soon as ISCI certifies that the Mu service analyzer is an authorized test device within the ISASecure® logo program.
The Mu service analyzer supports an optional Digital I/O Monitor channel
to facilitate the thorough characterization of control system
elements' (e.g., PLCs, etc.) digital output to ensure that even under
the most strenuous normal and exceptional network traffic conditions
the digital I/O control channel is not interrupted.
