What's in a Name? (Mu Dynamics blog)

by Dave Kresse on 20 May 2008 - 10:45:56 AM

What is in a name?  A funny thing happened to Mu and its network operators customers during the past year.  We grew very rapidly as a company, now surpassing more than 100 installations worldwide.  In the process of doing so, we realized that we were solving a much broader customer problem than our stated original goal – the broader problem of service, application, and network downtime.

Mu’s lineage started around security and the original intent of the solution was to identify and help expedite the remediation of any vulnerabilities before a hacker could maliciously exploit them.  “Hacker in a box” was the vision.  However, Mu's solution today solves this problem and a class of others tied to overall network operator profitability.   We have a highly unique, systematic, and automated solution for proactively identifying weaknesses that compromise a service, application, or network and cause downtime and customer churn.  This compromise might still be the result of a malicious attacking, but global network operators are discovering that IP based services are inherently more fragile than traditional services.  As a result, inadvertent and unexpected traffic patterns like inherent DoS weaknesses wreak havoc on service reliability and availability.  This is not just about security anymore.  Mu is about eliminating downtime through proactive service assurance – proactively and precisely identifying weaknesses that can cause downtime and addressing them before downtime occurs.

So, what is in a name?  For many new prospects, Mu Security conjured a set of incorrect pre-conceived notions around the problem we solve.  As a result, Mu Security is now Mu Dynamics.  Our customers we’ve talked to so far like Dynamics for several reasons.  First of all, the services, applications, and networks that our customers support are dynamic, not static, and require a dynamic solution to ensure they are reliable, available, and secure.  I also like the active inference Dynamics brings.  Unlike passive products that simply reactively monitor networks and their components, we take a proactive approach to eliminating downtime before customers experience it.

Mu Dynamics leaves a first impression that is true to the breadth of problem we solve and the unique way we solve it.  Now, the underlying technology speaks for itself.
