Media Alert: Security Expert Tom Parker to Demonstrate Mu Dynamics Solution at Black Hat USA 2011
Parker to deliver training course: “Building, Attacking and Defending SCADA Systems in the Age of Stuxnet”
SUNNYVALE, California — July 29, 2011 — Mu Dynamics, Inc. (www.mudynamics.com), the leader in testing and validating application-aware networks, today announced that security expert Tom Parker, co-founder and Chief Technical Officer of security consulting company FusionX, will be using the Mu Studio Security Suite at the Black Hat Technical Security Conference 2011 in Las Vegas. A double dose of the two-day training session entitled, “Building, Attacking and Defending SCADA Systems in the Age of Stuxnet”, will take place on July 30th and 31st and August 1st and 2nd.
Jonathan Pollet of Red Tiger Security will also accompany Parker during the training session. Parker and Pollet will be using the Mu Studio Security Suite to demonstrate vulnerability and robustness testing of industrial control system devices as a part of their training curriculum. This will include fuzzing industry standard protocols such as Modbus over IP as well as other proprietary and more obscure IP protocols.
Supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems are some of the most poorly understood, yet most critical systems in use in the world today, and while they generally remain unseen, they are responsible for the smooth running of our daily routines – from the moment we turn on a tap in the morning, to turning off the lights at night. SCADA systems are moving from isolated networks and becoming more open. Many of the systems are not secure and security testing is a necessity. The two-day course will provide a primer into the world of securing industrial control and automation systems as they relate to the numerous industries where they are most prolific.
“Mu Studio Security Suite is hands-down the best solution for performing the security testing required for SCADA systems due to its depth and breadth of capabilities pertaining to protocol level vulnerabilities and device robustness,” said Parker. “It’s fantastic that the students will get to see a live demonstration of the power and diversity of the Mu Studio solution, in a real-world setting – finding critical flaws in commonly used industrial control equipment. The closest many folks get to finding vulnerabilities in often obscure control systems equipment is through reading about them online – and because of that there’s a very steep and not so accessible learning curve. We’re changing that.”
“With the growing range of security threats targeted at our critical infrastructure, security professionals are looking at automated solutions to effectively deal with vulnerabilities, exploits and attacks,” said Dave Kresse, CEO of Mu Dynamics. “We are proud that Mu’s security solution is being showcased at Black Hat by Tom Parker and Jonathan Pollet, two well-recognized and respected experts in the security field, to demonstrate the testing of SCADA-based systems.”
