Media Alert: Mu Dynamics Confirms Netflix on iPhone and iPad Impacts Operator Networks More than on Android Devices

Application Quadrant Report Shows Importance of Collaboration Between Application Developers, Device Manufacturers and Service Providers

SUNNYVALE, California — July 05, 2011 — Mu Dynamics, Inc. (www.mudynamics.com), the leader in testing and validating application-aware networks, today announced the availability of its second Application Quadrant: “Understanding the Impact to Consumers and Network Operators of Different Mobile Devices Streaming Netflix.” In this report, Mu analyzed the Netflix service, taking a deeper look at the impact of multiple end point devices to consumers and network operators. Video consumption continues to rise at a rapid rate. According to Sandvine, Real-Time Entertainment traffic now accounts for almost half of all network traffic during peak evening hours. And Netflix alone now accounts for approximately 30% of downstream traffic during peak times in the United States. Mu tested a variety of devices in its Application Quadrant report including an iPad, an iPhone, a Sprint Nexus S 4G (Android OS), a MacBook (Mac OS X) and a PC running Windows 7.

The application quadrant revealed the following:

  • The iPhone and iPad are the most consumer-friendly, but the least operator-friendly.
  • The Android phone (Sprint Nexus S 4G) is the most operator-friendly, but the least consumer-friendly.
  • No device is both consumer and operator-friendly.
  • No device is unfriendly to both consumers and operators.

These results are leading to collaboration between application developers, device manufacturers and service providers in an attempt to make applications more network-friendly, minimizing network impact while ensuring the best end user experience.

“Operators are struggling with the unpredictable growth of applications and the devices used to access them,” said Dave Kresse, Mu Dynamics CEO. “With millions of people running applications like Netflix, spikes can occur on the network which often leads to disruption of other applications and services. Our solution can rapidly test performance and scalability of applications and networks by recreating millions of users accessing different applications across multiple end points – something no other solution is capable of doing.”

The next Mu Application Quadrant Report will focus on understanding the impact to consumers and network operators of various mobile devices accessing Skype.
